Salesman injured in van theft

A man has been seriously hurt when a thief knocked him over during a robbery of a van.

The victim, a dealership salesman who worked in Warwickshire, had responded to a request from a man who asked to test drive at VW Transporter. He took the van to pick up the suspect at a pub car park and drove on so the man could test drive the vehicle. But he locked the salesman out, knocked him over and drove off in the van.

When offering test drives it goes without saying you should have adequate motor trade insurance to protect your goods. In this case, it is likely the van was also damaged in the incident.

The salesman is in hospital after being dragged 10 metres down the road by the van before the thief escaped towards the A5. The man is in a serious but stable condition in hospital with injuries to his leg, torso, head and back.

Detective Inspector Jon Belcher said: “This was an extremely serious incident that has left a man with horrendous injuries that are likely to change his life.

“At this time we’re keeping an open mind as to whether the suspect intended to injure the victim or whether this was a robbery gone wrong. Either way, I believe someone out there has some information that will help us to identify the man responsible and I would urge that person to come forward.”

The incident happened on January 17 and the suspect is described as short and slim with a shaved head. The stolen van was a blue Transporter 2.0 TDI, with the registration WJ13FXW.
