Cabbies in Chelmsford have threatened to go on strike after claiming that the council is ignoring their concerns over their livelihood.
Local taxi drivers have expressed concern that Chelmsford Council is awarding a disproportionately large number of new taxi licences in the area, thereby threatening to overcrowd the market.
Dissatisfaction has also arisen as a result of the authority’s refusal to approve an increase in fares, with many cabbies becoming concerned they are not earning enough to make ends meet.
As a result, the GMB Union is warning that drivers may initiate industrial action during a weekend evening – which would leave many partygoers unable to return home – in order to get its message across to the council.
The warning comes after the union earlier this month demanded action from Clacton Council on the number of unlicensed drivers being allowed to operate in the area.
