Private hire vehicles could be allowed to use bus lanes in Reading if plans are approved by councillors in the city.
A public consultation could be launched should members of the local authority agree to the initial phase and should everything go ahead the lanes may be opened up to other forms of taxis.
At the moment only black cabs are allowed to the use the lanes but Reading Borough Council’s traffic management advisory panel (TMAP) will be asked to review the current regulation.
Tony Page, Reading’s lead councillor for transport, said: “We must ensure that including private hire vehicles in any of Reading’s new bus lanes does not increase congestion and delay our important bus services.”
In July, London taxi firm Addison Lee had its appeal for private hire vehicles to travel in bus lanes around the capital rejected following a long-running battle with Transport for London over the regulation.
