The Highways Agency (HA) is to be given new powers to remove and dispose vehicles from busy roads, van insurance customers may be interested to learn.
Regulations have been put forward in parliament that will allow traffic officers from the HA to remove broken down or abandoned vehicles from motorways and A roads in England.
The move will give traffic officers similar powers to the police, the HA stated.
Derek Turner, HA director of network operations, said: “Giving our traffic officers these new powers was always envisaged to complement the work they are already doing around the clock to improve safety and reliability on our motorways.”
A consultation into the decision to enable traffic officers to remove vehicles held earlier this year received a positive response, he added.
The HA recently announced that a new scheme is being launched to help reduce congestion of the UK’s busiest motorways, including the M25.
New traffic lights will be installed on junctions to ensure a regular flow of traffic, the body stated.
