What insurance do I need for Uber?
You need to have private hire taxi insurance to drive for Uber or any other booking app. It forms part of your agreement with Uber.
If you drive on your normal car insurance and an incident or accident happens, you will likely have claims repudiated (turned down).
UK Uber does not cover your private hire taxi insurance, you need to source this yourself. If you use your Uber for personal use as well as for carrying passengers, you should make sure your insurance covers you for this, too.

Does Uber taxi insurance include public liability cover?
Yes, public liability cover comes as standard on most policies, and is an optional extra on others. It’s worth taking out this cover – it offers protection if someone claims against your Uber service.
While public liability insurance isn’t a legal requirement, it could save your business should any expensive claims come your way.
How much is Uber insurance?
Uber insurance prices are similar to private hire taxi insurance costs, as the cover is the same. While private hire insurance can start from £13.25 a week, the price you pay is based on your own experience and requirements. Other contributing factors include:
- Driving experience
- No-claims history

What type of insurance do Uber drivers need?

Where will I need Uber insurance for?
Uber currently operates in the following towns and cities across the UK:
- Brighton and Sussex
- Cambridge and East Anglia
- Devon & Cornwall
Can I still drive an Uber in London and get insurance?
While Uber’s licence has been revoked in London, there is an appeal in place which was lodged by the company at the end of 2019. This means that approximately 45,000 drivers are still licensed by TfL until the appeal is heard.
While on the road, you still need insurance for your Uber in London. Without it, you risk driving illegally.
Don’t risk driving without Uber insurance. Make sure you keep your existing policy in place, or call us if you’re due for renewal. We can get you a quick quote and keep you driving.
Keep your eyes open for further announcements from TfL and Uber in the forthcoming weeks and months. Until then, you can continue to drive an Uber at least until the appeal is complete.
Can I get short-term Uber insurance?
While temporary car insurance is becoming more common, almost all insurers do not accommodate weekly or monthly Uber insurance policies.
ChoiceQuote will monitor the situation, but right now, the shortest policy available is for a 6-month period. Almost all our customers take out annual Uber insurance policies.
