Car owners in the UK have a mixed attitudes when it comes to using car mechanics, new research has suggested.
ClickMechanic surveyed 2,000 members of the public and found that 23 per cent feel stressed by the experience of visiting a mechanic, and 25 per cent feel nervous about even entering the garage. The problem, it would appear, is linked to drivers' own lack of understanding of car repairs, with 45 per cent stating they do not know how much common repairs on an average car should cost.
The risk of expensive repair work is not just an issue hanging over the heads of car owners, it is also a risk faced by car mechanics and dealers. ClickMechanic's survey found that 23 per cent of car drivers in the UK thought the quotes they receive from mechanics are based on a mere guess of the amount of time the repairs would take. Furthermore, a third of respondents also said they feel uncomfortable with questioning a quote because they do not know enough about car repairs or servicing.
Co-founder and CEO of ClickMechanic Andrew Jervis commented: "Most mechanics are reliable and trustworthy, but there are a minority of cowboys taking advantage of the fact that most consumers just don’t know how much their car repairs should cost. Consumers are paying a lot of money to keep their car on the road and in times of austerity there is an obligation on the mechanic to be honest about the average price of repairs and establish a level of trust."
